Seminars For Flying Fears

Categories: Travel tips | October 31st, 2009 | by traveller | no comments

Decades ago, quite a few major U.S. airlines featured complimentary flying fear help programs. One of the industry’s original offerings, from Pan Am in the mid-1970s, on occasion incorporated a complimentary hop on a quick flight. American, Northwest, United and US Airways also provided similar programs; however, budget cuts led to the removal of such initiatives.

Now, private firms and airfield authorities at facilities around the nation offer similar programs. For those outside the U.S., some international airlines still conduct fear of flying trainings at overseas locations.

Listed are summaries of some well-recognized programs.
Domestic seminars
MySky Program. This independent company evolved from Northwest Airlines’ in-house program, and now certified psychologists and airline pilots operate an intensive three-day agenda. Courses are held in Northwest’s two largest hub cities and typically include a brief flight. With early registration, the fees are $895 in Minneapolis/St. Paul and $995 in Detroit.

SOAR Program SOAR was established in 1982 by Captain Tom Bunn, an airline captain and certified therapist. He has helped over 7,000 people overcome fear of flying. It is the single curriculum proven highly effective by independent university research.Fear of flying treatment from SOAR establishes protection prior to flight that works automatically during flight.

Fear of Flying Clinic. This San Mateo, Calif.-based company—which was founded in 1976 by two female pilots—operates workshops throughout the year in northern California. Pricing information is accessible through the website.

Flying in the Comfort Zone Fearful fliers from the Wisconsin/Illinois region have been attending these seminars at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport for more than 20 years. The lessons are held on four successive Saturday mornings and conclude with a round-trip flight between Milwaukee and Chicago O’Hare. The company also offers a video seminar with a virtual flight for $159.95.

International Seminars

U.K.: Flying Without Fear Virgin Atlantic Airways conducts these seminars at frequent intervals at airports all around Great Britain, for a cost of 199 pounds. Of particular note is that the course offers a class tailored just for kids, which lasts half a day and includes virtual flight technology.

France: Stress-Free Flying. This program, sponsored by Air France, is described as an “anti-stress workshop” and includes an consultation with a flight stress professional and a session in a flight simulator. The price is 600 euros.

The Netherlands: The VALK Foundation. This curriculum is supported in part by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, while administration is provided by Leiden University. The program includes visits to static aircraft, flight simulators and actual flights within Europe. Private training activities are available as well.

Australia: Fearless Fliers. This Australian non-profit program is sponsored by Qantas Airways and has been in operation for more than 30 years. The curriculum includes relaxation and stress management techniques.

An Exciting Safari In The Desert Of The Arab Emirates

Categories: Travel tips | October 30th, 2009 | by traveller | no comments

Once I got to the UAE for business purpouses I did not expect that there were not only a lot of oppurtunities for my professional activity but also a hypnothising country to discover. Lodging in Dubai had given me the immediate sensation of finding myself just in one of the numberless metropolises of the 21st century. I blundered, as there is a world of outstanding places to plunge into.

Indeed, in this post I would like to tell you only about my desert trip, which initially I was even uncertain about booking or not. Fortunately, I finally decided to try it. A unique day that did put me in touch with the intense relationship that Emiratis have with the desert.

Dubai excursions
Depending on the specific excursion you have chosen, there is a different meeting point: the one I had booked was by off the road jeeps with some tracts of the route taking place on the back of camels. So, we were picked up from the hotel in the early afternoon by a well-experienced local tourist guide who drove us to the first target of our trip: a Bedouin encampment.

Initially I was quite impressed by the extremely silent atmosphere, which trasmitted me a great sense of balance, then we followed the guide who began telling us Bedouins’ traditions and how these are steadily conditioned by territorial and climate conditions. Actually, the huge range of temperature is the main natural event to be faced, together with sandstorms, of course. Bedouins are a very hospitable population: they showed us some of their tents while the guide translated what they were explaining us. Once inside the tent, we were offered to enjoy some tea with them which we willingly accepted. There were no chairs as they usually sit down on the ground and cross their legs. We did the same. Together with the herbal tea (having a very intense taste) we were offered some small cakes, that were made of pistachio. We appreciated them a lot.

Just after the tea a Bedouin woman near me asked whether I would be pleased to get a henna design on my hand, which is an extremely old tradition going back to the first millennium. I was very attracted by such proposal, as I saw a wonderful example of it on her hands: a bunch of flowers painted in refined style, that she said could last up to about 15 days. The painting dries up in more or less 10 minutes, afterwards you are able to do everything again with your hand. Don’t miss henna, it is so charming!

The next step of our safari was camel riding. As we all were quite well-experienced horse riders, it was not very difficult to understand the basic elements of camels’ habits, in order to establish a relation with one’s animal and not to be “refused” by means of unpleasant reactions!

The end of our tour in the desert was not less pleasant. As scheduled, our package included a late afternoon barbecue dinner, which turned out to be unforgettable. Lamb, mutton and chicken meat cooked on a grill, seasoned with some aromatic spices and served with different dishes of pulses, fresh vegetables and many mysterious sauces, which gave meat unexpected taste and contributed to make this excursion a special one to keep in one’s memories.
