Methods To Be A Considerate Traveler

Categories: Holiday Mountain | March 27th, 2010 | by traveller | no comments

Now more than ever we should all try to be considerate travelers. Traveling could possibly be a trying experience these days with increased safety checks, baggage restrictions, and crowded planes. Impolite or obnoxious passengers just ensure it is more tedious for all of us.

We have stated all along that you simply must be patient and versatile and things will work out. However what are some of the issues that we think you need to really NOT do?

To begin with do not raise your voice or use obscenities. Many people assume that the “squeaky wheel” will be the one which gets greased. Not true.

It’s normally considerate travelers who get the best help. The airline service personnel everyone knows give those squeaky wheels just the service that they are entitled to and no more. Yelling most likely will not get you a first-class seat assignment or get that baggage fee waived.

Definitely do not be foolish enough to raise your voice at security… that’s certain to slow you down with extra checks…. and slow the line down for everyone.

It is a little silly to threaten that you will never fly that airline again or keep in that lodge again. The airline agents and hotel clerks have heard that all before. They do the best they can to help you, and you mustn’t be blaming them… and besides, you almost definitely WILL fly that airline the following time you get a good airfare on them or keep in that lodge the following time you receive a great rate…. you are not fooling anyone. You’re venting for the wrong reasons, and they’ll in all probability want to help you even much less as a result of it.

We shouldn’t need to tell you not to joke round about weapons or bombs or explosives in underwear or something at all like that. No one at any airport might be amused… they’re going to name the police. Consider it or not… a few of this still occurs! Haven’t they been reading the information?

Do not drink too much. You already know that’s true if you’re driving, however it additionally applies everytime you’re flying. If the agent thinks you could be too inebriated to journey, they might deny you boarding. Flight attendants cease serving liquor to passengers who have had one too many. Generally it will get to be a problem.

My husband was as soon as requested by a flight attendant if he would mind changing seats and letting one other girl sit next to me. The man sitting subsequent to her was intoxicated and making an attempt to make passes at her. Imagine his surprise when he awoke to make one other cross and located my hubby there!

Do not try to cut in line because you’re in a hurry. You detest drivers that do that, and nobody likes vacationers who do that. Thoughtful travelers don’t depart their manners at home. Remember… “Do unto others…” When you simply behave like your mom taught you to, it will make travel higher for your self and for all your fellow travelers.

I have decided that 2010 is the year I am going to endeavour to teach myself a little more about the World in general and all the fascinating places there are to visit.

I will admit that Geography was never my best subject when I was at school. I think a major factor was the fact that my teacher was an absolute bore and he had no passion about his subject.

It doesn’t run in the family though as both of my children have studied Geography and they both have enjoyed it so much that it has prompted me to maybe re-educate myself.

As my son is considering taking a Gap Year he has been investigating different places to travel to. I think he has decided to plump for a Galapagos Islands Holidays. Mind you it isn’t going to be like his normal holidays, more a steep learning curve about other cultures.

As he is going to be away for at least 6 months, I thought a good place to start my Geography experience would be looking at the Galapagos Islands where he is starting his trip. The islands are part of Ecuador and consist of six main islands, with twelve smaller islands and at least forty small islets. Some of the islands are as far apart as a six hour boat trip. Bearing this in mind I would have thought that Galapagos Cruises are a really popular choice with visitors to the Islands and an absolutely brilliant way of experiencing the Galapagos.

Now for me Walking Holidays don’t sound brilliant, but when you consider what you will actually be experiencing you might change your mind. You may even be fortunate enough to get a glimmer of the wonderful Giant Tortoises. On reading up on the tortoises, I have already discovered that originally there were fifteen species of the Galapagos giant tortoise, but already four are extinct. However, thanks to all the efforts of the conservationists, the remaining species are managing to survive, which is absolutely fantastic.

I think my son is going to have a fantastic time when he is away, and he will certainly bring lots of new experiences and knowledge home with him. I think I will have my work cut out to learn about all the places he is going to visit, but I definitely think it is worthwhile, as knowledge is wonderful.

Adventurous Kerala: Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Categories: Holiday Mountain | January 17th, 2010 | by traveller | no comments

For those of us interested in adventurous tours into the wild and untouched forest areas and want to view the nature and photograph the wildest of animals in their natural habitat, a tour into the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, Kerala is worth considering.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located amidst the mountains of western ghats, in the Idukki district of the God’ own country, Kerala. It covers an area of 777 sq km and is one of most renowned sanctuaries in India.

The history of this park dates back to 1934, when the Maharaja of Travancore, on recommendation of his game warden, S.C.H. Robinson, converted the area around the lake into a sanctuary by the name of Nellikkampetty sanctuary. In 1966, the sanctuary was brought under the forest department and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was created. It was finally declared as a Tiger Reserve in the 1978. In 1991, the park was brought under the Project Elephant. The park was earlier also known by the name of Thekkady WildlifeSanctuary.

Formed in 1895, with the building of a dam, the Periyar Lake today is a major source of water for the resident animals and birds. About three fourth of the sanctuary is covered with evergreen and semi evergreen rain forests and the rest one fourth of the area is covered by Periyar River and Pamba River. The beauty of the lake and the environ of the sanctuary lapped under the mountains combined with the smell of fresh air coming from the moist deciduous forest is very soothing for the visitors and makes one long to return for more. It is one of the largest and most frequented reserves in India. No wonder this sanctuary is known as the pride of Kerala.

Periyar is home to the most exotic of the flora and fauna. It houses around 62 species of animals, ranging from the most ferocious Tiger to the most peaceful Deer. There are around 35-50 tigers in the Periyar sanctuary and most of the tourists come here to get a glimpse of these tigers moving around in the forest. The other animal of interest to the tourists is the Indian Elephant. It is a wonderment watching this huge animal playing recklessly by the Periyar lake. There are about one thousand elephants in this sanctuary. Other animals that could be seen here are Leopards, Common Langurs, Mouse Deer, Malabar Squirrel, Indian wild Dogs, Nilgiri Langurs, Lion Tailed Macaque, and porcupines, Bonnet Wild Boar, Sambar, Macaques, Nilgiri Tahr, Dhole and Barking Deer. Talking about the reptile population of the park, there are 45 species of them here, including a variety of snakes, turtles and lizards. King Cobras and Pythons, the two very poisonous snakes are a common sight in the park.

Speaking of birds, there are about 180 species of them, including Kingfishers, Darters, Cormorants, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. Tourists who are interested in spotting these birds should carry binoculars with them.

Best time to visit this park is between the months of November to May. This is because during this period the waterholes inside the forest areas dry up and the inhabitant animals come up to the lake to drink water and take bath in the waters. Therefore, the chances of sighting wild animals are enhanced during these months.

On a tour to Thekkady or Periyar sanctuary, one should not miss the boat cruise in the lake. This way one can both enjoy the beauty of the Periyar Lake and sight see wild animals while enjoying a boating trip. Although it is normally not possible to see many animals from the boat, still you can spot a family of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the lake. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing when taking a boat cruise

One can also do Trekking and Jeep safaris in the sanctuary. Trekking, especially night trekking is an exciting option for all those who have the energy level for carrying out such an expedition. Prior permission needs to be obtained for this purpose from the forest department. They will sent armed guards with you for your safety to guide you and to prevent you from getting lost in the forest area.

The other exciting option for adventurous tourists is bamboo rafting. Spotting animals from bamboo raft is perfectly safe and if you are lucky, you can even sight Tigers while on the bamboo raft. Another option of enjoyment in Periyar is elephant riding and Nature walk. In Nature walk, the tourists, accompanied by forest officials, go on a walking expedition around Lake Periyar. This provides a satisfaction of roaming around in the park inhabited by numerous animals. Do ask your tour operator to give you a list of options available so that you can select one based on your liking or energy level.
