Tennessee Real Estate – Music To The Ears

Categories: Tennessee | November 16th, 2009 | by traveller | no comments

Tennessee is the state of prairies, towering mountains and country music. Inexpensive Tennessee real estate will also put a jump in your step.

Tennessee

Tennessee is a state with a little bit of everything. Parts of the states are comprised of lush, rolling fields with horse farms and agricultural. In other sections, you can find the Appalachian Mountains, which need no introduction. Of course, no mention of Tennessee would be complete without discussing the music scene. With cities such as Memphis, Tennessee is a mecca of music and, of course, the home of Elvis.

Memphis

If original music and an active nightlife are your things, Memphis is the city for you. The city is the home to vibrant blues, soul, country and rock scenes as well as numerous record labels. Historically, the economy of the city was tied to the cotton industry, but this is no longer the case in modern times. Instead, Memphis has become a modern city while maintaining its historic charm. If you are an avid Elvis fan, this is the place you will find Graceland.

Knoxville

Surrounded by no less than three mountain ranges, Knoxville is a picturesque city with a quiet atmosphere. Well, quiet so long as you don’t live next to the University of Tennessee, which is located in Knoxville. With a huge student population, the town rallies around the football team by filling Neyland Stadium with over 100,000 people per game. You have to see it to believe it.

Nashville

When you think about Nashville, you think about country music. Over five million people Nashville each year to immerse themselves in it. Home to the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville is best experience by hitting the nightlife. If you love country music, Nashville may be a great relocation spot. If you don’t, you should probably look for other locations.

Tennessee Real Estate

Despite being a physically appealing location with a hot nightlife, Tennessee real estate is very cheap. Single family homes in Memphis or Knoxville run in the $180,000 range, while the same home in Nashville is roughly $210,000. Tennessee real estate appreciated at a steady but modest rate of 6.8 percent in 2005.

California Escapee Shares Nashville Discoveries

Categories: Tennessee | July 10th, 2009 | by traveller | no comments

I made the decision to post as much information as I could about living in Nashville to show our buddies and neighbors from California just why we moved here and what they are missing. Everyday we read and see more news stories about what sad shape California is in we pat ourselves on the back for making the decision to flee the (formerly) Golden State.

I’ve recently penned some articles and put together some videos that give a lot of local information about Nashville and info on other topics as well. If you need tourism information, or just plain curious about the Nashville, I believe you will find something you enjoy here.

Just the other day I was walking around lower Broadway taking a few photos for a video tour I’ve been putting together. We’re in the middle of a little heat wave, but that didn’t seem to be discouraging people from hitting the honky tonks. I did notice that Mike’s Ice Cream Parlor near the corner of Third Avenue was jammed. By the way, the humidity in Nashville isn’t nearly as bad as the East Coast or deep south. I’m thankful for that.

Within about three blocks I counted no fewer than three Elvis statues. I understand that Elvis is perhaps THE American music idol, but he’s associated with Memphis so much more than Nashville, you know, Graceland and all. But I guess as long as tourists keep getting their pictures taken in front of the statues, merchants will keep dragging them out to the sidewalks every day.

The local jazz scene is of special interest to me here in Nashville. I recently wrote an article on where to find free and inexpensive jazz. I won’t re-list everything here. You can read the article for yourself. One thing I forgot to mention is that the new Whole Foods store in Green Hills is doing a jazz brunch every Sunday. The music starts around 11 a.m.

My wife and I are big on outdoors walks and hikes. We’ve spent a lot of time exploring the various state and local parks that are a quick drive from downtown Nashville. You would be surprised the little distance you need to go to get the feeling that you are alone in the wilderness. So if outdoor activities are high on your “to do” list, make sure you check out Nashville, and Central Tennessee.

Before we moved here I was talking to a well-traveled cousin of mine back in California. He and his wife have done a lot of cross-country travel. They typically camp along the way. The first time I mentioned that we were considering a move to Nashville his immediate response was, “Nashville has the friendliest people of any place we have ever been.”

And I have to say that my experience bears him out. People here are the most friendly and polite I have ever encountered.

What a breath of fresh air.

Ski Vacations in Tennessee

Categories: Tennessee, Ski Vacations | September 13th, 2007 | by | no comments

Located near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Ober
Gatlinburg is the only ski resort in the state. It is
more than just a ski resort, however. It is a complete
family vacation spot with an amusement park, indoor
ice skating, a bungee tower, an alpine slide, and
many other activities and attractions – there is
something to please everyone.

With an elevation of 3301 feet, and a vertical drop of
600 feet, Ober Gatlinburg features eight trails: two
beginner trails, four intermediate trails, and two
advanced trails. There are three lifts, including two
quad lifts, one double lift, and one surface lift. The
season runs from the middle of December through
early March, and night skiing is allowed on all trails
except the Grizzly trail.

Rentals are available for both ski equipment and
snowboarding equipment. Private and group lessons
for skiing and snowboarding are also available
through the Smokey Mountain Snow Sport School.
You can also easily find food at the many snack
bars, food carts, the caf?, the restaurant, or in the
lounge.

You must not miss the longest chair lift ride in the
south! You will see awesome views of the Great
Smoky Mountains. You will also get a bird’s eye
view of some of the slopes, and you can have your
picture taken on top of the mountain. If you don’t
ski, don’t worry! You can ride back down the
mountain on the chair lift as well. Don’t forget the
Tramway. The tramway departs from downtown
Gatlinburg and takes you to the ski resort and the
amusement park.

Even if you don’t ski, you can still explore the thrill
of flying down a mountain at a high speed – or a
slow speed if you choose. This is possible with the
Alpine Slide. The slide is approximately 1800 feet
long, and takes you down a winding wooded slope.
You have total control over your speed with the
use of a braking device on each sled. Other
attractions at the amusement park include the
Black Bear Habitat, a bungee jump, a water race,
go karts, indoor ice skating, kiddie land, an arcade,
miniature golf, a Spider Web Velcro Wall Jump,
water rides, and a shooting range.

No matter what type of fun or adventure you are
seeking, there is something to satisfy everyone in
the family at Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and
Amusement Park. This is definitely a trip worth taking
– especially if you have younger kids or senior
citizens traveling with you.
