Hilton Head Island is one of the more attractive tourist destinations in the Southern U.S.. It is especially popular with those living in the southern United States. It is a very comfortable place to visit and it is a fairly accessible drive from just about any location in the southeast. There is not a lot of hustle and bustle that you might get with the bigger, more commercialized beach vacation spots.
There are approximately 14 or 15 miles of beach in Hilton Head. There are several popular areas for those wanting to spend a lot of time on the beach. We have only seen a few places. For the most part the beaches are easy to get to. They are fairly flat, so if you are someone that likes to walk or run for a biker, early mornings on the beach are a fantastic time to be out.
The tides are pretty low in the morning time but they rise rather quickly as the day goes on. The crowds usually get on the beach at around 10 or 11 in the morning. Even at its busier times, the beaches were not too busy. There was plenty of open area to do anything you wanted to do without having to run into anyone. As you would expect the busiest times were on the weekend, specifically Saturday. So if you do want to get a good spot on the weekend you may want to get out there a bit earlier.
The last Hilton Head beach we stayed on had everything you wanted. There were public restrooms and changing rooms. Beach showers were available so you could remove the sand off of you when you decided to call it quits for the day. Volleyball courts were available to everyone. There were not a lot of courts, so if you wanted to play volleyball you would have to get a spot early in the day. They were constantly occupied when we where out there.
There was also a bar that was a popular spot later in the evening. It was almost on the hotel property but was not limited to just those that occupied the hotel. Anyone could check it out. Beverages were served nightly. Live music was aplenty just about every e evening until about 10 or 11 pm.
Some beaches were more popular than others for bikes and seeing wildlife. Certain areas around Sea Pines were great places to go if you wanted to get a glimpse of dolphins or other wildlife. There is also a lot of bicycle riders in the Sea Pines area. You must pay attention to what you are doing, the people on bicycles can come out of nowhere. This is true regardless of whether you are in your car or walking in the Sea Pines area.
I highly recommended a Hilton Head vacation to all families. We plan on spending a lot more time there. It is a good spot for the whole family. There are things for children to do and also things to keep the adults interested. It is even fun if you want to do nothing but lay back a unwind on the beach for a few days.
