Picking Out The Right Luggage Set
Categories: Travel tips | 2010 | by traveller | no commentsOne of the most time consuming tasks we faced when we were planning our summer vacation was shopping for the right type of luggage that would suit all of our needs. Since there are four of us we needed luggage with a fairly good capacity to fit all of our clothes and other items. This is the first trip of longer than four days that we are taking as a family. So the mix and match luggage, one large hard suitcase and an unmatched duffle bag, that we have been using up until this point is really not sufficient for this trip which will total seven nights. We certainly didn’t realize how difficult it would be, given the choices available, to find and buy the right luggage.
We started with a list of features that we really wanted or needed. First off we needed at least two large suitcases. We figured that each would hold enough clothing for two people and that any other items could be carried in the carry on. For some reason there is no such thing as a luggage set with two large suitcases. One is always slightly smaller than the biggest one in the set. The style that we wanted was the durable nylon exterior and top lid design. We didn’t want the traditional clam shell design which is always difficult to close when it is full. Of course, rollers were important although I have seen people tote their luggage on a collapsible hand truck instead of having wheels on the luggage itself. The most common sets that would suit our needs usually had five pieces: a large suitcase, a medium suit case, a small suit case, a garment bag and a carry on bag. We basically accepted that this is the predominant configuration.
The next surprise was the prices of the top brands. Forget Tumi which the typical four of five piece set can cost close to two thousand dollars. Even the American Tourister, mid market level type sets were more expensive than we expected. We visited several department stores and found that each set that we looked at had one thing or another that we didn’t like, or if we did like it, it was out of stock. Also, most sets are black. It would be nice to have a larger selection of colors to choose from. Believe it or not, Target had a tremendous selection of models with the hand truck wheels on the bottom and pretty good prices. Now granted, these lower priced pieces are not high end quality, but they will serve our purpose and will not cost more than the vacation. We spent an hour looking at about a dozen different sets before we settled on one that had the features and room that we need.
